Tick Fun Facts!

● The Tick was created by Ben Edlund, whose original 12-issue comic run (1988-1993) is a must read for any real fan of the character, as it introduces the Tick, Arthur, Oedipus, Paul the Samurai, Running Guy, Chairface Chippendale, Chainsaw Vigilante, and Barry Hubris (the NY Tick). And ninjas! I reference a LOT of the Edlund plots and characters in my Tick stories.

● The original Tick comics were followed by several other series: Tick Karma Tornado (9 issues), Paul the Samurai (10 issues), Man-Eating Cow (10 issues), and Chainsaw Vigilante (3 issues).

● In 1997, the Tick bounced back with Eli Stone’s Tick: Big Blue Destiny series (5 issues), which led to the 1998 Luny Bin trilogy (3 issues). The four seasonal specials I did ran concurrently with the BBD and LB series.

● The 1999 Tick & Arthur series followed the Luny Bin story, wrapping up a few of its loose ends while also kicking off a brand new storyline that paid deference to Edlund’s original series.

● Since Tick & Arthur, there have been a plethora of seasonal specials, as well as Heroes of the City (6 issues), The Tick: Color (6 issues), The Tick: Golden Age (3 issues), and The Tick: Days of Drama (6 issues).

The Tick Introduction

I got my start in comics writing and drawing for The Tick series in 1997 with four seasonal specials: Yule Log 1997, Romantic Adventure, Summer Fun Special, and Back to School. The art’s a bit raw, but I think the writing still holds up as the one-shots are all chockful of yuks.

In 1999, I moved on to the six-issue Tick & Arthur series, where I was able to play with longer narratives and more story continuity (although even the seasonal specials had plot elements that all tied together). I added grayscale to the art to help flesh out the black-and-white look of the book, a look that eventually carried over to the first Runners series. I still love the work I did on Tick & Arthur, since I think the stories and art are a lot of fun and also add some layers to the Tick universe.

I stopped doing full Tick comics in 2000 to start work on my sci-fi project, Runners. Since then, I’ve continued to do covers for various Tick books, as well as content for the Circus Maximus series. In 2007, I returned to the Tick universe to contribute a short story to the Tick 20th Anniversary Special. I also wrote and drew my first full issue since 1999, The Tick Comic Con Extravaganza!
